General Information –
Donors are advised to donate in Institutions only, preferably after confirming with the doctors or other reliable hospital authorities, so that the blood that they donate is not misused for selling by wrong elements.
In case they find any such seekers, they’r advised to report back to the site, so that we can alert the rest of our users.
Also the donors need to keep in mind a few pre- requisites that are required before blood donations & though these vary from hospital to hospital, the common one’s are –
Age 18-60 yrs ( if <18 then consent is needed)
Hb levels - 12.5 mg/dl or more.
There are minimum height & weight requirements nt less than 45 kg in women & 55kg in men (the weight & height criteria may vary from institution to institution)
BP between 110/60 - 140/90
Pulse – 80-100 bpm should be regular.
Other Important perquisites -
If the person is suffering from minor illnesses like cold, flu, viral infection, etc, he has to avoid blood donation till the infection is completely gone.
If the person was administered antibiotics, he has to avoid for donating blood for at least 3 days after the treatment is over.
If the person is suffering from asthma, he should avoid donation of blood till his condition comes back to normal.
If the person has undergone blood transfusion, he has to avoid blood donation for the next 1 year.
If the person has undergone dental surgery, he has to avoid blood donation for a day after fillings or cleaning, and 3 days in case of root canal or removal of tooth.
If the person has undergone body piercing or got a tattoo, he should avoid for at least a year.
If the person has been indulging in any sort of drug abuse, he has to avoid blood donation for at least a year.
If the person has indulged in alcohol consumption, he has to avoid it for 12 hours after the same.
If the woman has undergone normal pregnancy, she has to avoid it for 6 weeks after delivery.
If the woman has suffered miscarriage or undergone abortion in 1st/2nd trimester, she has to avoid it till she recovers completely.
If the woman has suffered miscarriage or undergone abortion in 3rd trimester she has to avoid blood donation for the next 6 weeks.
If the person is suffering or suffered from malaria, he has to avoid donation of blood for 3 years after complete recovery.
If the person is suffering or suffered from Tuberculosis, he has to avoid it till 2 years after complete recovery.
If the person has undergone open heart surgery, he has to avoid it till 3 years after the surgery.
If the person is suffering from sexually transmitted diseases (that are curable), he has to avoid blood donation till he recovers completely.
If the person had physical relation with a prostitute, he has to avoid blood donation for at least a year.
If the person has undergone any surgery or suffered from a serious injury, he has to avoid blood donation till he is completely healed.
If the person is suffering from anemia, he has to avoid blood donation till recovers completely.
If the person is suffering, or has suffered, from ailments like measles, mumps, chicken pox, he has to avoid blood donation till three weeks after its occurrence.
Reasons for Deferring the Person from Donating Blood Permanently
Given below are the reasons that prohibit a person from donating blood for lifetime:
If the person's blood is found positive for HIV/AIDS infection.
If the person has suffered from hepatitis after the age of 11 years.
If the person has consumed drugs intravenously, even once.
If the person is suffering, or has suffered, from cancer.
If the person is suffering from any blood clotting disorder, such as hemophilia.
If the person is suffering from any lung or liver disorder.
If a man has indulged in safe/unsafe physical relationship with a man, even once.
If the person is involved in prostitution.
Other than these cases of blood donation restrictions, the person is prohibited from blood donation for a lifetime if he is suffering, or has suffered, from any of the following diseases:
Syphilis
HTVL (Human T - lymphotorpic virus)
Babesiosis
Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) – even if a family member has been detected with this disease.
Colitis
Colostomy
Dementia
Emphysema
Filariasis
Gout
Hemochromatosis
Prostate
Multiple sclerosis
Stroke
Chagas disease
Seizures
After donating whole blood - next donation can be done only after 3 months.
After donating Platelets – after 7 days.
After donating plasma – after 28 days.
(Users are advised to update their donation status accordingly)
Donating blood when u have been certified fit by a blood bank to donate leads to no weakness or side effects.
After blood donation it advisable that u rest for half – 1 hour.
It is essential that donors follow the above mentioned pre-requisites carefully not just for the safety of the receiver but for the safety of donor himself.
